Krang
Sounds of Death: 12" EP
KRANG are from Chicago and they play brutal, down tuned crust with ripping, dive-bombing heavy metal guitars. I love this shit and this album does a really great job of capturing what I like about this type of music so much! They play faster than the bands like STORMCROW or SANCTUM and don't have quite as blown out of a sound. KRANG probably has less in common with BOLTTHROWER and are more tuned into maybe DEVIATED INSTICT and their style of stench crust. The drumming is pretty straight forward and keeps a nice punk beat behind the bitchen' riffs cooked up by a dude named Austin. Way to go Austin! The vocals are gruff and crusty while avoided the cookie monster belch. Although very aggressive to can actually tell what throat-man Brendan is trying to get across. There are even gang-chorus back-ups that really brighten up a few of the tracks and offer crust punk sing-alongs. Another tactic that keeps the songs exciting. The album come complete with lyrics, a poster and has all around cool artwork of skelton warriors and axes, daggers, brains and skulls...cool crust imagery. I like that they broke free of white on black for the album cover and went with a primarily white sleeve with black artwork. It makes the album cover stand out from my other records, and even makes it seem kind of fresh.

Black Hole of Calcutta
Black Hole of Calcutta: 12" LP
BHOC = Stormcrow + Tragedy + Bloody Phoenix
This is NorCal ’core that’s fast, black and political, and manages to sit safely outside the Motӧ/Discharge Krusts-with-iPhone-and-Rickenbackers kontingent. They have a pretty dense sound that skips between crusty hardcore, thrash and back to grind over and over again. They’re competent musically, so the longhairs can feel good and evil about spinning it, too. The album has crusty breakdowns and giant riffs (“Hey War”) and a beefy production that’s present enough to give the music some power without sanitizing it … and as abrasively ugly as this album is sonically, visually, the packaging is beautiful, silk-screened artwork on a grainy cardboard sleeve. The album looks great and sounds real nasty. Ooomph. A.C.A.B. Up the punx and bang the head that does not bang. Soundin’ like His Hero is Gone certainly ain’t a crime in my leather-bound book. –Dylan Chadwick

IMPATIENCE
Impatience: Cassette EP
Precise, ferocious hardcore that loses none of its momentum for the fact that it’s recorded very well. A Milwaukee band made up of people from Protestant and Enabler (among others), Impatience is playing a dark, pummeling variant of hardcore easily on par with bands like Tragedy and Totalitär. Moody, atmospheric, and a little bit scary; this is a fine release. –Keith Rosson

ENABLER / AMBASSADOR GUN
split: Cassette EP
Enabler = Weekend Nachos + All Pigs Must Die + Victims
Yours truly eats up stuff like this. Enabler is crust-core at its absolute finest, and this split cassette with Ambassador Gun is one of the most downright filthy things I’ve heard since Dystopia played at the Dojo 10 or so years ago. Discordant, down-tuned guitars punish the ears, while spastic drumming and vocals from the “Kill Them” wing at the insane asylum will no doubt ruin your party. This is short, to-the-point, go-fuck-yourself hardcore that is not for you or your older Hatebreed-loving brother. Ambassador Gun offers similar fare, but with a bit more Coalesce influence, especially vocally and riff-wise. Luckily, for all those out there who ditched their tape players in the early aughts, this trash-loving cassette is also available on 7” vinyl ...Get off the bandwagon and do yourself a favor by tracking this down. –Gavin Hoffman

JESUS OR GENOME
The Veil is Lifting: 7" EP
Jesus or Genome = Rocky Votolato + Sundowner + City and Colour
Jesus or Genome is the new project from Mike Cundick, guitarist and occasional screamer of local rockers Loom. Those expecting the same sharp guitar licks and chaotic energy of Cundick’s other band are in for a surprise, as Jesus or Genome is a much more mellow affair, featuring only Cundick’s voice over an acoustic guitar. On this 7” (available on red or black vinyl from Sacred Plague), Cundick gets some help from Cicadas violinist Kim Pack, though it’s Cundick’s thoughtful lyrics and affecting guitar work that compel listeners’ attention. It’s easy for acoustic solo projects to venture into pretentious and unlistenable territory, but Cundick manages to dig deep with his lyrics while keeping his music surprisingly fun and catchy. “Savior” has some great, quick fingerwork and a bouncy melody while “We Are Contagious” has a huge chorus that will be stuck in your head for days. Topping off a great package, the 7” comes with a download code that features a bonus track. –Ricky Vigil

SUNSHINE SS
Teen Choices: 7" EP
SUNSHINE SS play gritty hardcore punk that is dirty and angry in that early BLAG FLAG way. In fact SUNSHINE SS do an amazing job of capturing that early USHC sound while keeping it fresh and entertaining.
The guitar tone, the palm muted strumming, again it's all there and it's just killer. The riffs are raw and heavy, kinda' like a dead cow with a future in ground beef. The drums deliver exactly what is needed to keep the songs moving along, pummeling anything that gets in the way, but never going astray. Everyone in the band really seems to know their role and what needs to be done.
The vocals of Walt Liquor capture the frustration of early adulthood and deliver their tales of angst with the perfect amount of snot and attitude...

When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will Be Beautiful: 12"LP
...leads their ongoing saga of revolution into dark new territory. It’s an important statement about the relationship between revolution and personal transformation, released at just the right moment for Wisconsin. But the music is what brings this message into gory, horrifying color.

I FAIL:
Highways…: 10"
Five epic political hardcore songs. Belted lead vocals with nails-on-chalkboard shrieks in the background. Ominous guitar breaks tying the parts together. These songs are on the longer side, and may draw comparisons to Fucked Up, but I find this record a lot more dynamic and engaging than anything I’ve heard by that band. Blackberry yogurt colored vinyl. Props for the before and after photos of the now burned down Touchdown Jesus (Google it). –CT Terry
